AMORAN Under Otunba Danku: Revolutionizing Motorcycle Transport and Empowering Ogun State Youths
By Timothy Odedina
In Ogun State, a quiet but powerful revolution is taking place in the motorcycle transport sector—one that is not only reshaping the industry but also providing livelihoods for thousands of youths. At the heart of this transformation is the Articulate Motorcycle Owners & Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), led by its visionary chairman, Otunba Taofeek Sokoye, popularly known as *Danku*.
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting AMORAN’s headquarters at the Car Wash along Obantoko-Adatan Road in Abeokuta, and what I witnessed was nothing short of inspiring. The once-modest office has undergone a stunning transformation—now equipped with modern facilities, air conditioning, and a professional setup that rivals corporate offices in the state. But beyond the physical upgrades, the real story lies in the people, the innovations, and the life-changing impact AMORAN is making under Danku’s leadership.
A New Era of Professionalism in Motorcycle Transport
Motorcycle taxis (okada) have long been a major means of transportation in Nigeria, but they have also been plagued by recklessness, lack of regulation, and negative public perception. AMORAN is changing this narrative by instilling discipline, safety standards, and professionalism among riders.
During my visit, I observed:
- Structured training programs for riders on road safety and customer relations.
- Enforcement of safety measures, including mandatory helmet use and proper rider identification.
- Digital innovations, such as member databases and coordinated dispatch systems, ensure efficiency.
What was once seen as an informal job has now been elevated to a respected profession, thanks to AMORAN’s structured approach.
Empowering Youths: More Than Just Transportation
The most striking part of my visit was witnessing a hall filled with young men and women from all 20 local governments and 236 wards in Ogun State. These were not just riders—they were entrepreneurs, students, and ambitious individuals who found hope and financial stability through AMORAN.
As I sat in the meeting, I saw Otunba Danku recognizing and rewarding hardworking members with promotions, financial support, and even motorcycles. One of his lieutenants told me, *“This is what he does every time—he lifts those who are dedicated.”*
I spoke with several riders, and their stories were moving:
- A young man who used his earnings to go back to school.
- A single mother who now supports her family through AMORAN.
- Former unemployed youths who now own their own motorcycles.
The chairman’s commitment to youth empowerment was further evident when, as he prepared to leave, dozens of members approached him, thanking him for their monthly stipends and support packages. It was clear—this was more than just a transport union; it was a lifeline for thousands.
Innovations and Future Plans
Beyond daily operations, AMORAN is pioneering initiatives to secure a brighter future for its members:
- Health insurance schemes for riders and their families.
- Partnerships with financial institutions to provide loans for motorcycle ownership.
- Advocacy for better government policies to protect riders’ rights.
Otunba Danku’s vision extends beyond Ogun State—he hopes to make AMORAN a national model for organized and empowered motorcycle transport.
Conclusion: A Blueprint for National Transformation
AMORAN’s success under Otunba Danku proves that what many see as a mere means of transportation can become a tool for massive youth empowerment. By combining structure, innovation, and compassion, Danku has built a system where hard work is rewarded, lives are transformed, and the motorcycle transport sector is dignified and professionalized.
As Nigeria grapples with unemployment and informal sector challenges, AMORAN stands as a shining example of what is possible when leadership meets vision. The future of transport empowerment is here—and it rides on two wheels.
