Eid-ul-Mawlid: FG declares Wednesday public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, September 27, 2023, as a public holiday. This is to mark the Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration and the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The announcement was made in a statement on Monday by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Oluwatoyin Akinlade. She noted that the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, urged Nigerians to be tolerant. The Deputy Governor of Ondo state, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approached the state High Court, sitting in Akure, to stop the impeachment process initiated by the State House of Assembly against him. In the suit number, Suit No. AK /348/2023, filed on Monday, by Mr Ebun Adenoruwa SAN, the embattled deputy governor, asked the court to stop the impeachment process against him pending the hearing and determination of the suit that he has filed in court. The state house of assembly began the process of impeachment of the deputy governor, last week, as it wrote a letter to Aiyedatiwa, over an allegation of gross misconduct, while he was in office as an acting governor. Wike Revokes Another 22 Land Allocations

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike has revoked 21 plots of land in Abuja’s Central Business District CBD. A revocation notice signed by the permanent secretary in the FCT Administration, Mr Olusade Adesola said the minister took the decision, “in the exercise of the powers conferred on him under Section 28(5)(a) & (b) of the Land Use Act 1978”. He said the lands were revoked “for continued contravention of the terms of development of the Right of Occupancy to wit non-development”. Some of the allottees affected by the revocation include Lowe Lintas, Tourist Company of Nigeria, Coscharis Motors, CFA Motors, Chidol Properties, Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan among others. Tension enveloped the environs of Lekki, Lagos on Thursday night as police officers fired canisters at sympathisers who stormed the location to demand justice and pay tribute to late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad. Following the directive from Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos state police command has kick-started an investigation into the death of musician, MohBad. The Lagos police command on Monday, September 18, inaugurated a 13-man probe panel following the directive of Governor Sanwo-Olu. Following recent clashes among rival cult groups in Sagamu, the Ogun State government has announced restriction of movement from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The government, therefore, urged residents of the town to abide by the restriction order pending the time the security of the area will improve, as police and other security agencies are on top of the situation to restore normalcy. There is an Outbreak of Cholera (Aarun òní gbá méjì) in the Ijebu North Local Government area of Ogun State.  Cholera is known to occur during raining seasons and may also be associated with poor environment and personal hygiene. It commonly present with stooling with or without vomiting leading to dehydration. Cholera can result to death if the severe dehydration is not promtly corrected. UAE official says visa restrictions not lifted for Nigerians

The United Arab Emirates has contradicted claims by the Nigerian government that it is to lift a year-long visa ban on Nigerian travelers. An official from the Gulf state told CNN: “There are no changes on the Nigeria/UAE travel status so far.”  The source asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media. The UAE said in a notice last October it will no longer issue visas to citizens from Nigeria and 19 other African nations. It did not provide further details. Obtaining a 30-day tourist visa was relatively easy until the UAE abruptly stopped issuing the visas to Nigerian nationals. Flights between both countries were stopped last year after Dubai’s Emirates airline suspended its operations in Nigeria citing trapped revenues. The carrier said it could not access and repatriate its funds amounting to $85 million withheld in Nigeria. UK govt raises fees for student, visiting visas

The United Kingdom government has announced over 600 per cent increment in student and visiting visas which will now cost £115 (about N111,878.28 ) as opposed to £15 (14,592.70) for visitors, and £127 (N123,537.58) to £490 (N476,677.59) for students, effective October 4. The Home Office’s announcement on the prices of the new visas had an over 600% per cent increment. The increase, the government said, would enable it to pay for “vital services and allow more funding to be prioritised for public sector pay rises”, adding that the review would take effect on October 4.
