Detained NURTW President regains freedom, sues for peace

The President of National Union Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Prof. Tajudeen Baruwa, has regained his freedom from police detention


.He cautioned members of the union against making inflammatory statements that could undermine its stability.

The advice came against the backdrop of the misunderstanding within the union, which led to the deployment of police to ‘safeguard’ its secretariat.

Baruwa, who spoke at a briefing in Abuja, yesterday, clarified the events that led to his detention, alongside former Lagos State chairman of the union, Tajudeen Agbede

According to him, the police action was taken in response to plans by certain groups within the union to stage a protest at the national secretariat located in Garki 2, Abuja.

“We are calling on our members across the states to be calm, peaceful and law-abiding in their daily activities,” said Baruwa.

He encouraged members to prioritise the interest of the union above personal matters, saying:  “We want to assure you that the matter is being addressed and it will soon be resolved.”

The NURTW president also appealed to members to remain lawful and avoid any behaviour that could disrupt public peace.

He stressed that the union had maintained peace over the years and would not tolerate any threat to its track record and successes.

On a positive note, Baruwa commended the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, under the leadership of  Joe Ajaero for their swift intervention during the crisis.

“We want to use this medium to express our appreciation to the Nigeria Labour Congress, our members at the state councils, and branches for their support and intervention on the issue,” he added.

Baruwa urged state chairmen and members to work collectively towards the resolution of the current dispute and  focus on uplifting the union.

“We are working towards resolving the issue in question,” he assured, urging members to go about their usual activities without any fear,’’ he said

The Chicago State University (CSU) has responded to the request by former vice president Atiku Abubakar in line with an Illinois, United States (U.S.) court order. In its response, the CSU insisted that it does not keep copies of diploma certificates issued to students. It also confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu graduated from the school in 1979. The CSU said Tinubu graduated in 1979 with a bachelors degree in Business Administration. It, however, said that after diligent search it was able to find some but not give the names because of privacy concerns. It further said that it could not find that of Tinubu which Atiku claimed was presented by the president to INEC. The university said it found some diploma certificates with the same font as the one being queried by Atiku.

AMORAN Inaugurates Otunba Taofeek Sokoya as New State Chairman In Ogun

The Articulate Motorcycle Owners & Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN) in Ogun State has officially inaugurated Otunba Taofeek Sokoya as the new chairman of the union. The inauguration ceremony took place today at the union's state secretariat in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The leadership transition duly follows the resignation of the former chairman, Otunba Nurudeen Aina Alowonle. In response, the union's executive members unanimously elected Otunba Sokoya as the new chairman, entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the organization. The event was marked by the presence of prominent dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, and the Ogun State Commissioner for Transport, Engr. Gbenga Dairo. Also in attendance were the union’s deputy chairman, Mr. Kazeem Lawal, along with other members of the state executive council.

In what appears as transition of leadership, Otunba Taofeek Sokoya (a.k.a Danku) has been unanimously voted as the new Chairman of the Articulate Motorcycle Owners & Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN). This follows the resignation of Otunba Aina Nurudeen Alowonle, who stepped down to pursue his 'lifelong ambition'.  During an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, the state executives of AMORAN addressed the resignation letter submitted by Otunba Alowonle. In his letter, the outgoing chairman expressed his intent to resign due to his decision to contest for the position of Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government in the upcoming Ogun State local government elections.
