FG, Ogun To Finance Lagos-Ota- Abeokuta Expressway Reconstruction

  Respite is on the way for commuters plying the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway as the Federal Government on Thursday proposed to jointly rehabilitate the road with the Ogun State government. The proposal was made by the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, during a courtesy call on Governor Dapo Abiodun in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The minister was on a tour of federal roads in the Gateway State, along with officials of the ministry. Umahi, while replying to Governor Abiodun on the frustration experienced by Ogun and Lagos states during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to get the road done, disclosed that the period of bureaucracy in road construction in the country was over. Councilors in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State have suspended the Chairman of the Local Government, Mr. Wale Adedayo for three months on allegations of maladministration and financial mismanagement. Seven Councilors, on Thursday  said the Legislative Council received various allegations that need to be investigated and directed Mr. Adedayo to appear at its next sitting on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Fifteen allegations were levelled against the suspended chairman. They include: * Withdrawal of N4million from LG account for empowerment in 2022, which never took place. * Wastage of N2million on Isese day on August 20, 2022. *Duty tour allowance for the chairman and other top functionarie N260,000 in June 2023. *Another duty tour allowance for the chairman and other top officials engagement in Ab eokuta to the tune of N250,000, also ratified  in June 2023. * N426,000 purportedly spent on the production of report on 2020 Jigbo festival ijebu east,  w

Tinubu to address world leaders at UN General Assembly Sept. 19

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will address the 78th Session of the high-level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, September 19. The UN correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu, in his first outing to the Assembly, will be addressing world leaders in the evening of that day. The Nigerian President would be the fifth African leader to speak on day one of the gathering, according to the speakers list from the Office of the General Assembly President, According to the list, Tinubu will be the 14th speaker out of 20 leaders slated to speak on the first day. The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the 10th speaker, will be the first African leader to speak in the morning session of the Assembly. Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said that his administration is deploying drones, helicopters and other technological innovations  to address security challenges in the State. A nonagenarian who designed Nigeria’s flag, Pa. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (OFR), is dead. Pa. Akinkunmi, aged 93, died in the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness. His demise was announced via the Facebook account of one of his children. He wrote, “Life is indeed transient; I can say boldly that you live a life with a landmark. Continue to rest, my father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R.): Great Man has gone.” Pa Akinwumi, a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, was born on May 10, 1936, but lived in Ibadan until his demise. He attended Baptist Day Secondary School, Ibadan, for his Primary education and Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan, for his Secondary education. He started his career as a Civil Servant at the Secretariat of Ibadan and later travelled overseas to study Agricultural Engineering at Norway Technical College. By James Ogunnaike All the 20 Local Government Chairmen in Ogun State on Tuesday night besiege the Office of the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun to ask for his forgiveness on behalf of one of them, Chairman, Ijebu East Local Government, Wale Adedayo, who accused the governor of withholding LGs’ allocations. In a dramatic turn of event, the Council prostrated and begged the governor for forgiveness. The Chairmen led by the ALGON Chairman, Babatunde Emilola-Gazal, stormed the governor’s office in Abeokuta, and begged for forgiveness. A dozen Gabonese soldiers appeared on television Wednesday announcing they were “putting an end to the current regime” and the cancellation of an election that, according to official results, President Ali Bongo Ondimba won. A 29-member Central Working Committee (CWC), headed by the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, saddled with the mandate for the distribution of palliatives in the state has been empanelled by Governor Dapo Abiodun. The composition of the Committee is aimed at ensuring that the palliatives reached every strata of the society, in line with the promise made to the people of the state by Governor Abiodun. A statement issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Mr Lekan Adeniran, noted that there will be a similar Committee at the local governments to ensure the seamless distribution of the palliatives. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration has concluded plans to reintroduce monthly sanitation as part of strategies to keep the city clean. Mr Wike stated this in Abuja on Monday after a closed-door meeting with contractors handling different projects in the FCT. He said that he had already briefed President Bola Tinubu on the idea that at least two Saturdays in a month would be declared for sanitation from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. He explained that the move would enable companies supporting the FCT with logistics to go to market and other public places to evacuate refuse.           More roads have now been enlisted for rehabilitation across the State, Ogun State Public Works Agency (OGPWA) has commenced rehabilitation of major roads among which is the Brewery outbound route to Olomore, which was usually water-logged during the peak of the rainy season.            A statement by the agency stated that the rehabilitation works would include the construction of a 140-meter drainage system designed to control water overflow on the right-hand side of the road and a cross culvert to redirect water into the existing culvert on the left-hand side of the road.            The statement further indicated that the existing culvert and drainage (open and covered) LHS would undergo desilting to ensure efficient water flow to the discharge outlet.                          It reads," There are plans to resurface the failed portions of the road to enhance smooth traffic flow for commuters in fulfilment of the infrastructural development dri

Men of the Department of Security Services stormed Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday night to stop men of the National Union of Road Transport Workers( NURTW) from holding its delegate conference, describing it as illegal. The police had last week in Abuja arrested the president of the union, Alhaj Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, for allegedly importing thugs and armed men into the Federal Capital Territory. The union’s National Secretariat was equally sealed off by security police to prevent a breakdown of law and order. They were barred from using the Secretariat for the election. In an attempt to take it away from the attention of the security agencies, the union members on Wednesday converged in Lafia, Nasarawa State, to conduct the election, but security agencies disrupted the proceedings and everybody including the leaders of the union, ran to avoid being apprehended. Government seeks support for improved healthcare delivery in Ogun

Minister assumes office, pledges stable electricity

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured that the Federal Government will empower Nigerians through stable and accessible electricity. The minister, who gave the assurance when he assumed office on Monday in Abuja, stressed that every home, industry, school, and business would benefit from the government’s efforts. To achieve the feat, Mr Adelabu said the ministry would leverage the Nigerian Electricity Act 2023 to boost power supply in the country.
